Marketing Your Invention

"A market is never saturated with a good product, but it is very quickly saturated with a bad one."
Henry Ford

There are many ways to go about marketing your product.

You might consider licensing or selling your invention to a company to manufacture and distribute. By licensing or selling your invention, a company pays you for the rights and they are responsible for manufacturing, marketing and distribution. For a fee the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will publish in the Official Gazette of the USPTO a notice of the availability of a patent for license or sale. For more information on this you should call their office at (571) 272-4200. There are also independent agencies which are in the business of selling patent licenses

Many inventors successfully invent, manufacture, advertise and distribute their product themselves. If your product is truly unique you may want to start a web site to sell your invention. One example of a successful inventor who is selling on the internet can be found at Stream Dancer Dot Com.

Join a local inventors club or organization, they can be found in almost every state (see Inventor Organizations and Clubs). Talk with other inventors, they are usually very generous in sharing their experiences both successes and failures. Visit our Inventors Stories link and read what other inventors have to say.

From The
The United States Patent and Trademark Office

In nearly all states there are state planning and development agencies or departments of commerce and industry to assist inventors. If you do not know the names and addresses of your state organizations, you may obtain this information by writing to the governor of your state or by accessing the Small Business Administration Web site at http://www.sba.gov/

Above All Don't Be Scammed.
There are many websites, companies and individuals out there who will take your
money promising to market you product with little on know results.

The USPTO writes:
"Every Year thousands of independent inventors like yourself, are targeted by
unscrupulous invention promotion, marketing and licensing firms.

These firms take advantage of inventor's enthusiasm for their product. They not only
solicit inventors with exaggerated promises to obtain valuable patents but they make
false claims about the potential market success of those inventions.

These firms provide you with basic market research at a large fee and ultimately
obtaining an overly narrow or useless patent that is worthless in the marketplace.

"Remember if sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
